Muscat is the largest city of Oman and also its capital. It is located in the northern coastal part of the country. It is facing the Gulf of Oman which is a part of the Arabian Sea. The opposite shores of the southern Iran are located about 100 miles north and north west of Muscat. The total area of the city together with its numerous neighborhoods is estimated to be close to 1400 square miles. The city is situated at the northern part of the Western Al Hajar Mountains located in the eastern Arabian Peninsula which is the south western area of the Asian continent.
The city of Muscat is located about 185 miles east of the city of Al Ain, about 220 miles south east of the Strait of Hormuz, and about 275 miles east of the city of Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates. The city of Muscat is the largest port of the Gulf of Oman. It is surrounded by plenty of neighborhoods and small towns like Qurm, Mina Al Fahl, Ruwi, Darsait, Bawshar, Al Muna, Bawshar Heights, Ghala Industrial Estate, and many more. The cities of Barka, Seeb, Al Hajar, and Quriyat are the closest ones to Muscat. The city center is situated rather in the western part of the city area. Muscat International airport, which is one of the largest and the most important transportation connections in the country, is located about 11 miles west of the city center of Muscat. There are a few small rivers in the area that flow down from the Al Hajar Mountains. The river of Wadi is the largest of those and it crosses the city from its southern to northern side.
